Museum Cards and Cookbooks Flying off the Shelves
The two latest endeavors of the Museum of Wayne County History, the Historical Pack of Wayne County Playing cards and the cookbook, “Behind Bars: Recipes from the Old Jail” are both incredibly hot items this holiday season.
The Wayne County Deck of Historical playing cards takes on the look of years gone by. Covering a span of over a hundred years, each card face highlights a photo ranging anywhere from the late 1800’s to more recent history. From historical buildings and events to historical figures and other photos that bring out the unique history of each of the 15 towns of Wayne County, NY.
The cookbook has has 176 recipes from volunteers, board members, former directors and even some recipes from those who lived at the 21 Butternut Street house when it was the Wayne County Jail! The book cover has a picture of the north side cell block in full color. “Behind Bars: Recipes from the Old Jail” also has easy to read print and full color dividers depicting other interesting museum exhibition spaces and artifacts.

Wayne CountyHistorical Society Historical Deck of Cards Available.The Wayne County Historical Society’s Museum of Wayne County History isoffering a deck of playing cards featuring 55 different historical photos from Wayne County on the face of each card. This Wayne County deck of playing cards takes on the look of years gone by. Covering a span of over a hundred years, each card face highlights a photo ranging anywhere from the late 1800’s to more recent history. From historical buildings and events to historical figures and other photos that bring out the unique history of Wayne County, NY.
“Some of the photos on the cards are sepia, some black and white and some in color,” said Executive Director of the Museum of Wayne County History, Larry Ann Evans who went on to say that there is something or someone represented from every town in Wayne County. “It’s a great Christmas gift, or anytime gift,” said Evans.
The face cards are designed the way “souvenir” playing cards used to be printed with round photos, historical facts and fun information. “Most souvenir playing cards today will have a unique photo on the back, but then have normal faces,” says playing card collector and Newt’s Playing Cards owner, James Esteph. “Using normal faces on the decks has become a cheap way for publishers to get around what used to be a wonderful collectible.”
This deck holds true to the historical side of “souvenir” playing cards by using 55 beautiful, Wayne County photos on the face side and a beautifully designed picture of the Museum of Wayne County History on the back.

The exhibit is quite extensive and features the collection of member Phillip Durham, of Texas. There are all kinds of silver and china in many patterns, plus glassware, paper advertising and much more. Display, "Birds and Birding" includes early bird art, books and field guides, two Victorian egg collections, antique bird figurines, and much more. The display is a tribute to Lyman K. Stuart and T. Spencer Knight, both respected bird experts. Lyman Stuart won First Prize in a photo essay contest sponsored by LIFE Magazine in 1955. There were 35,000 photos submitted from 49 countries. His Flying Birds are pictured in a 1956 Life Magazine on display, which you are welcome to look at. Display of the museum's collection of Newark Souvenir China (1895-1920), which features 50 different examples picturing the Custodial Asylum, Newark (Central) Park, the Library, Washington/Union School, the Fox Cottage where Spiritualism was founded in 1848, and more. High quality prints of a watercolor entitled "Sodus Light" by artist Craig L Davis are available. Painted in 2006, the size is approx. 15" x 11". A framed example is on display in the museum's Arts & Entertainment Room. The prints are $100 each, of which $25 will be donated to the N-AHS. Craig Davis is a graduate of Syracuse University School of Fine Arts. He is a Newark High School graduate, Class of 1978. He currently lives in Colorado with his wife Jennifer Bach and their two children.
Galen Historical Society has 2 museums located in the Village of Clyde. The Mill museum located at 14 Sodus Street houses a large collection of farm implements, household items, and the Sports Hall of Fame. The Brick Church Museum located at 31 North Park has displays including the Clyde Glass Works, Morrison Printing Press, Modes of travel, Business, Military, Churches, and a large collection of Genealogy Records. Lyons history "Winston Dobbins' Old Geezer Network". Several years ago, the late Winston Dobbins, a man who loved all things Lyons, created the “Old Geezer Network”. The network is an informal e-mail sharing of pictures, newspaper articles and memories of life in early Lyons. When Winston became ill and could no longer head the network, he asked Allyn Perry and Andi Evangelist to take over his position. Topics covered vary from week to week. Most recently there was an active discussion about car dealerships. The question, “Who sold Studebakers in Lyons and where was the shop located?” set off a flurry of varying opinions. Eventually the question was answered to everyone’s satisfaction after photos of newspaper ads were offered as proof. Some members are quick to become involved in the e-mail conversation and others just sit back and read what others write. Either approach is fine. The present “Geezer” membership ranges in age from 30ish to 90ish and includes people who still live in Lyons and those who have long since moved away. There is no fee to join. Anyone who is interested in remembering or learning about Lyons history is welcome to join. The office is above the Dept of Motor Vehicles. These newly reprinted books contain indexed maps of each town and hamlet in Wayne County in 1858. The index cross-references settlers/businesses names and locations. An original Gillette Wall Map is on the wall of the County Clerk's Office located on the first floor of 9 Pearl Street, Lyons.
